Crackdown on Hospital Violence by Health Minister

September 29th, 2009

Acting on 2007-08 reports showing 7,343 cases of violence against NHS staff in Wales, NHS Wales and the South Wales Police have decided to work on investigations into allegations of violence.

Health Minister Edwina Hart recently signed a policy statement comprising of a new set of rules on referring cases of violence to the police, investigating the cases, gathering evidence, providing statements, and on supporting victims of abuse when their case is taken to court.

Moreover, an imminent re-organisation of the NHS in Wales is underway, and new Health Organisations are to be formed and named individuals appointed at Executive Director and non-officer ranks. With frequent cases of violence pouring in from all quarters and being reported at Board meetings, these organisations would focus on handling such cases within their individual setups.

Mrs Hart is sure that these steps will bring to book the errant offenders and act as a deterrent to others. She pronounced her determination to eradicate workplace violence against the NHS staff.

According to her, it is intolerable that NHS staff should face aggression and violence while carrying out their day-to-day activities. Any incident -whether it is in the form of verbal abuse or physical assault - is objectionable and cause psychological stress on staff who are only trying to do their job. Such violent action by a few visitors or patients not only harms the staff, but also other visitors and patients.

The Certificate in Employment Relations, Law and Practice (CERLAP) is designed to help those who are involved in HR/personnel activities to implement effective HR policies around employment relations and get-to-grips with the key issues that impact on employment practice.
