Scribbled Slogans in a Foreign Language

July 30th, 2009

Am I dreaming or what? I just got a call that I have won a luxury trip to the Caribbean. I have never gone abroad and this will be my first trip away from my little town in the Midwest. I have always dreamed of going abroad. I have even attended language classes at the university to prepare for a sojourn overseas sometime in the future. Now, I have my chance. You bet I am really excited. I don’t usually believe in good luck charms and all that stuff, but now, I am convinced that my new Parker pen has brought me luck.

Last month, I was in the library leafing through some French magazines to brush up on my French skills. I came across an ad with a slogan contest for a travel website. A vacation at a luxury resort in St. Martin was the prize for the best slogan. Just for the heck of it, I noted down the details in my writing pad, thinking that I could at least see how well my new Parker pen wrote. Playing around with words about the website on my note pad, I jotted down at least five slogans .I only remember thinking what a pleasure it is to write with such a smooth instrument. As you can see, my focus was on the act of writing, not on the slogan or on the prize. I noted down the address and sent them a sheet with all my slogans along with particulars about me. I got call from the distributors of the magazine in the US informing me that one of my slogans had been selected as the winner. You can imagine my disbelief!

St. Martin in the Caribbean is a tiny island shared between France and the Netherlands. On the French side, Marigot is the capital and Grand Case is a small seaside town. I will be going to a luxury resort in Grand Case, also known as the culinary capital of the Caribbean. The hotel is close to the beach and there were several day trips available from Grand Case to go around the island and boat trips to nearby islands. This is one luxury trip that I am going to enjoy in more ways than one as I also get to practice my French !
